How to Make Your Life Better — Two Powerful Tools – Part One

 In Articles, Growth, Happy Life

Are your thoughts and emotions holding you back?

That’s a loaded question, so take a few moments to really think about it.

How often do you doubt yourself or feel discouraged? How often do you find yourself trying to please people? How often do you feel anxious, depressed, or afraid?

If that’s you, you’re not alone. We’ve all been there.

I’ve prayed with SO many people all around the world about their thoughts and their emotions, and I truly don’t know anyone who can say that they’ve never once let their thoughts, feelings, or emotions get out of hand at some point in their lives.

My own thoughts and emotions used to affect every area of my life. In fact, I used to think my only hope was just to stop feeling anything at all. I tried to bury my emotions. I wouldn’t let myself care, trust, or cry in front of others because I thought it would make me look weak. I became emotionally numb. But I quickly discovered that suppressing your emotions is the worst feeling of all.

As I began to study God’s Word about the problem, I realized I had it all wrong.

Our thoughts and emotions are actually extremely powerful tools God gave us for success.

He created positive thoughts and emotions to help motivate you to work toward your goals, push through circumstances, chase after your dreams, forgive more easily, love others, laugh, and even speak up and act against injustices.

But negative thoughts and emotions are a different story. Negative thoughts, emotions, and feelings are toxic to you and to everyone around you. They can stop you dead in your tracks, or send you down an undesired path of self-destruction. And you may end up taking others along for the ride.

Life can be SO much better than you can possibly think or feel when you learn to think what God thinks about you and make your emotions work for you, not against you.

Now is where you’re probably thinking, “Drenda, it’s not that easy. Thoughts just pop in my head, and my emotions seem to have control over me! I can’t just flip a switch and start thinking differently and controlling my emotions!” Or something like that.

And you’re right. Changing your thoughts and controlling your emotions are NOT easy. But both ARE POSSIBLE.

There are practical and spiritual principles you can use to change your thoughts, manage your emotions, make better decisions, and take control of your life.

John 8:32 says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

The power for unlimited freedom has been given to you. The ability to break through any and every obstacle and move past limits is yours. It’s in the truth. It’s the truth that sets you free. So, the first thing you need to do is reintroduce your mind to the truth—to what God says about you.

You can choose to think about what God believes about your situation and on who He says you are. You don’t have to think on everything that pops into your head.
