How to Make Your Life Better — Two Powerful Tools – Part Two
Read Part One here.
The Bible says that we’re to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Plain and simple, you’re going to have to say, “Wait a minute. I used to believe this, but this is not what the Word says.” Then you measure what you say and what you believe against what God’s Word says, and you take thoughts captive that don’t line up with what the Bible says, and you cast them down.
I love how 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 reads in The Message Bible. It says,
“The world is unprincipled. It’s dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn’t fight fair. But we don’t live or fight our battles that way—never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren’t for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.”
You have been given “powerful God-tools” and they are “ready at hand!” One of them is the ability to renew your mind to the things of God.
This is the biggest reason why my husband, Gary, and I say that memory verses aren’t just for kids; they’re for everyone. If you memorize Scriptures, you’ll have them ready and waiting to replace negative thoughts that try to come up and to prevent negative emotions from rising up.
Years ago, when Gary and I hit rock bottom financially and cried out to God, and He started changing the way we thought about the Kingdom of God and about ourselves, I put Scriptures and the promises of God everywhere. In fact, since I used to run into the bathroom when I felt depressed or when I was throwing myself a pity-party (because it was my only quiet place), I even put Scriptures there.
Gary and I needed constant reminders that we wouldn’t be in the wilderness forever—that we were going through a hard time, but we were going through—we weren’t staying there. We were headed somewhere else, somewhere better. We knew God had promises for us and for our family. The Word of God was working in our hearts and minds. We were learning how to access the Kingdom inside of us by renewing our minds.
You can also use your “powerful God-tools” to manage your emotions.
Emotions play a huge role in our lives. If we don’t understand how to manage them, they can wreak havoc, leading us on whims and causing us to miss God’s best for our lives.
This topic is crucial and is too often overlooked.
Plain and simple, you don’t have to let negative emotions and feelings run your life.
You don’t have to deal with mood swings. You don’t have to fly off the handle. You don’t have to be, or feel, out of control.
And you don’t have to try to pretend you don’t have any emotions or feelings. You don’t have to stuff them down or bury them, or become emotionally numb to everyone and everything, like I tried to do. Believe me, ‘Fake it till you make it’ doesn’t work when it comes to your emotions.
As a friend, I want to help you use your thoughts and emotions as the powerful tools God designed them to be.
I want you to share with you the principles and tools you can use to change your thoughts, manage your emotions, make better decisions, take control of your life, and experience success.
That’s why I wrote my two books, Better Than You Think and Better Than You Feel, because I know that how you manage your thoughts and your emotions is key to transforming your life. These steps to success are now compiled in two power-packed books.
