Redeeming the Stage: Christian Influence in Entertainment

In Articles, Drenda On Guard, Entertainment

Entertainment is one of the most powerful forces shaping the culture today. Movies, music, television, and social media are more than just pastimes; they are classrooms teaching a worldview. Every story, lyric, and image carries a message about what to love, what to fear, and what to value. The question is no longer whether we are being influenced but by whom.

As Christians, we are not called to withdraw from this space but to bring light into it. God is still raising up creators who use their gifts to reflect His truth, offer hope, and remind the world of what is good, beautiful, and eternal.

The Power of Story

From the beginning, God used stories to reveal truth. Jesus taught in parables that captured hearts and opened eyes. Stories still hold that power, but today many of the loudest ones are written without Him. Too often, what the world calls entertainment quietly normalizes confusion, celebrates rebellion, and redefines morality. What we laugh at today, we often tolerate tomorrow.

Yet rather than retreat in frustration, believers are called to respond with creativity. If the enemy uses media to spread lies, we can use it to spread light. God is still raising up storytellers, artists, musicians, and filmmakers who use their gifts to point people back to truth.

Engaging Without Losing Conviction

It is tempting to think the only way to stay pure is to avoid the culture entirely. But Jesus did not call us to isolation; He called us to influence. The challenge is to engage without compromise. We can enjoy art, music, and entertainment while still measuring them against the Word of God.

Philippians 2:15 reminds us to shine brightly in the world, standing out as lights that reflect God’s truth and character. The darker the world becomes, the more visible the light is. As believers, we are called to model discernment, to support what is good, and to lovingly reject what is not. Every time we choose media that uplifts truth, we cast a vote for the kind of culture we want to see.

Raising a Generation That Discerns

The next generation is being discipled by screens. What children and teens watch today will shape how they think tomorrow. That is why it is so important for parents to lead with intentionality and not fear. Instead of simply saying “no” to culture, we can teach why certain things matter. Help your family see how entertainment influences values, and point them toward what reflects God’s heart.

We can also invite creativity back into our homes by encouraging our kids to create rather than consume. Write stories, make music, and celebrate beauty that honors truth. The goal is not to hide from the culture but to shape it with integrity and hope.

Protecting What Shapes the Heart

The things we watch, listen to, and admire shape the way we think. Entertainment may seem harmless, but it can influence values more powerfully than we realize. That is why guarding our hearts is essential. When we fill our minds with truth, it strengthens our convictions and keeps our perspective rooted in God’s Word.

Parents, mentors, and leaders have an opportunity to model discernment for the next generation. Instead of avoiding hard conversations about the culture, we can teach why it matters. Helping young people understand how media influences beliefs equips them to make wise choices that honor God and protect their future.

Becoming a Voice of Redemption

The world does not need less creativity; it needs redeemed creativity. God’s people belong in every arena of influence, including the stage, the screen, and the studio. When we create from a place of truth, excellence, and faith, we offer the world something real and lasting.

Every believer has a role to play in this redemptive work. Some are called to create, others to support and champion those who do. Together, we can shift the atmosphere by choosing to fill our homes, platforms, and conversations with what points people to Christ. The goal is not to escape the culture but to reflect God within it and to shine as light in places that have forgotten what light looks like.
