Rediscovering You: Why You Need a Hobby
Did you know that the average American spends over 10 hours on screen time a week? ????
Ten hours!!!!
Think about what you could do with 10 hours a week!
But the sad truth is that most people are content to just sit back, put in their eight hours at the office, go home, get into PJs, and watch TV or swipe until it’s bedtime.
My guilty pleasure? Warm coffee in the morning and online shopping. Ha!
BUT I also really try to do the things that I like, the things that make me, me, the things that exercise more than just my swiping finger. ????
So, step away from the phone….
And take a minute to check out these tips that will help you get energized and feel a little more like you.
Hobbies Are Part of What Makes You, You.
I think the most interesting people are the people with the most interests.
God made each of us unique. But what does that even mean?
It means that there are specific things that make you unique.
For example, my daughter Kirsten is the adventurer. She is always working on her bucket list, crossing things off and adding new, sometimes mischievous, ideas and adventures. One of those was swimming with sharks. ????
P.S. – I’ve done that! ????
No, I am NOT telling you to go swim with sharks!
But, I am telling you that whatever you enjoy, that’s exactly where you need to allocate some precious time. ????
Takeaway?
Your passions are your clues, and pursuing them will add meaning to your life in new and expected ways.
Did Someone Say Stress Relief?
I know sometimes it feels like it’s hard to find extra time to do anything. But…
It’s so, so important to put time and action into the things that will help you de-stress.
I have a friend who gardens as soon as she gets home from work and on the weekends.
Now, is that my idea of a stress reliever? No way!
But for her, it’s a way to unwind and be around something she loves, the smell of the earth and the fragrance of flowers. ????
Whatever you like to do, do it all the way! ????
Our passions were placed inside of us by God, and when we exercise those passions, whether it’s swimming with sharks or gardening, we are giving glory to Him!
First Corinthians 10:31 (NIV) tells us, “… whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God!” Amen!
God loves to see us happy, and hobbies can be an amazing source of happiness!
You may feel ordinary, but God made you with a unique combination of interests.
If your feelings are telling you who you are, DANGER! ????
Your emotions should work for you…

Hobbies help remind us of the exact ways that we are special and unique.
To-do Lists Can Be Fun!
Each week, I’m sure you make several to-do lists for yourself: grocery lists, weekly tasks, work deadlines, and the list goes on.
But how often do you make a fun to-do list that you look forward to?
Carving out time, even an hour a week, to do something that you truly enjoy will do wonders for your attitude. ????
How many times a day do you look at the clock?
My wish for you is that you spend a little time every week doing something that makes you forget the clock, something you aren’t rushing to complete.
Want to write a book? ????
Write a page a day. That’s 365 pages a year!
Want to get married but feel like there is no one out there?
Well, you aren’t going to meet him sitting on your couch. ????♀ A lot of
married couples meet while pursuing a hobby: a bike riding group, a painting
class, a sporting event, a continuing education class.
Plus, meeting someone who enjoys similar interests is part of the foundation for a successful marriage!
I just want to encourage you to remember that you are special. You are loved. You were created to live a happy life, a life so fulfilling that you wish you could stop the clock, instead of wishing it would go faster.

God wants you to enjoy your time on earth, so don’t live life counting down the minutes.
