Three Months after Dobbs: Did the Supreme Court’s Overruling of Roe v. Wade Settle the Issue of Abortion in America?
For almost 50 years, abortion on demand has been the law of the land and a scourge upon our nation. As of January 2022, 63.4 million children in the United States have been murdered in the womb since abortion was legalized in 1973!
But, praise God, on June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pa. v. Casey, the “Court’s ‘most notoriously incorrect’ substantive due process decisions!” The Court held “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Roe and Casey must be overruled, and the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives.” While Dobbs didn’t make abortion illegal across the nation, it returned the right to legislate this profound and fundamental “moral question” to the states. Curiously, the draft of the Court’s opinion was leaked to the press in May, 2022—an extraordinary breach of the confidentiality standards maintained by the Court.
In the wake of Dobbs, 15 states have banned nearly all abortions, with an exception to preserve the health or life of the mother, including Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Texas. Many states have enacted or enforced existing restrictions on abortion after six weeks of gestation or the detection of a fetal heartbeat, including Georgia, Ohio, Florida, Utah, Pennsylvania, and others.
While Dobbs was certainly a victory for life and what I called a “day of restoration,” the Court’s ruling did not end abortion in America or silence abortion advocates. Laws in states like California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts still place few restrictions on abortion, including a minor’s ability to obtain them without parental consent. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom will likely sign more than a dozen abortion bills and approve $200 million in the state budget to expand abortion services, including for out-of-state residents.
It wasn’t long until those familiar World Economic Forum (“WEF”) “partners” and globalists stirred up anti-life sentiment with their woke corporate activism. Many pledged their financial support for their employees who seek abortions out of state. Here is a partial list: Accenture, Adobe, Amazon, Apple, Bank of America, Citigroup, Comcast-NBC Universal, CVS, Dell, Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., Google, Hewlett Packard, Inc., HP, Johnson & Johnson, JP Morgan Chase, Kroger, Lyft, Mastercard, Inc., Meta, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, Netflix, Nordstrom, PayPal, Reddit, Starbucks, Tesla, Uber, Vox Media, Walt Disney Company, Warner Brothers, Wells Fargo, Yelp, and Zillow.
Not surprisingly, celebrities, including Madonna, Jessica Chastain, Lizzo, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, and others boycotted Independence Day following the decision. Some women advocated for a “sex strike” against men, including their husbands, until abortion on demand was reinstated. Protesters in various cities gathered to chant sick vulgarities. Pro-abortion protesters have even swarmed conservative justices’ personal homes holding baby dolls and wearing bloodstained clothes. Most chillingly, a man armed with the intent to kill Justice Brett Kavanaugh came to his home after the leaked decision and has since been indicted for attempted murder.
In the political arena, Georgia Democrat and abortion extremist Stacey Abrams was recently recorded claiming that unborn babies’ heartbeats aren’t real at six weeks but a “manufactured sound designed” to take away women’s rights. Abrams is again running for governor of Georgia after a failed campaign in 2018, which she attributes to “voter suppression” and a “broken system.” “There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks,” Abrams said while sitting on a panel. “It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman’s body in place of her.”
In response to Abram’s outrageous claim, many people responded online by pointing to Planned Parenthood’s position on fetal development on its website: “What happens during week 5–6? A very basic beating heart and circulatory system develop” (emphasis added). Planned Parenthood actually altered its page after Abrams’s comment to now state: “A part of the embryo starts to show cardiac activity. It sounds like a heartbeat on an ultrasound, but it’s not a fully-formed heart—it’s the earliest stage of the heart developing.”
Unfortunately, megacorporations, abortion providers, pop stars, and politicians were not the only ones to push back against Dobbs. A self-described pro-choice senator and pastor has recently expressed his “deep respect for choice.” Last week, U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) said at a rally in Atlanta for seniors that with respect to abortion, “even God gave us a choice.” Warnock elaborated, “So, I trust women in their wisdom to sit with their own doctor, and, if they choose, to sit with their pastor, and to pray about that and let their own conscience guide them.” According to Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, “Senator Raphael Warnock strenuously opposes any limits whatsoever on abortion—including brutal late-term abortions up to the moment of birth and even infanticide.” She added, “Georgians are deeply disturbed by Warnock’s shameless push to strip human rights from the most vulnerable and defenseless among us, the unborn.”
Despite the huge advances our nation has made toward protecting the unborn over the last three months, we still have work to do both in the world and, if Senator/Pastor Warnock is any indication, in the church. In my book, Fight Like Heaven! A Cultural Guide to Living on Guard, I identify seven mountains of influence that control the world around us: religion, economy/business, health/medicine, media/entertainment, government/politics, education, and family. Although the issue of abortion touches upon all of these mountains in some way, the mountains primarily in play are politics, economy, media, and religion.
We must contend in the political sphere now more than ever. For almost 50 years, advocates for life have been battling against a seemingly unmovable giant, Roe v. Wade. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that “Roe will never be overturned.” Now that the giant has been slain, we are now perfectly positioned to take territory in this mountain! Justice Alito’s words made it clear: “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.” By God’s hand, laws protecting the unborn have swept across the nation in the last three months. But we must never relent. As Abrams’s words demonstrate, pro-abortion politicians will literally say anything in defense of killing the unborn. Abrams’s statement “[t]here is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks” is an obvious shot at the “heartbeat” laws now on the books of a growing number of states. Predictably, Planned Parenthood, which reported $1.7 billion in income and over $2.1 billion in net assets for fiscal years 2020-21, was right there to back her up. Abrams’s appalling claim was reminiscent of the propaganda I heard in middle school from my school teachers that unborn children were “just blobs of tissue.” It was a lie then, and it is a lie now.
Now that the issue of abortion has returned to “people’s elected representatives,” it is time to become more engaged in politics at your state level. Make phone calls, email your legislators, do your research on congressional and gubernatorial races, and vote for pro-life candidates! Maybe now is the time for you to run for office or volunteer for another believer’s campaign. Hold politicians’ feet to the fire when they make outrageous, pro-death claims like Abrams; call out their lies and flood their social media with the truth!
On the economic mountain, we need to send a message to these companies who are willing to pay out-of-state travel expenses for their female employees to obtain abortions that we wipe our hands clean of this literal blood money. Given these companies’ self-aggrandizement on this issue, information on where they stand is easy to find. Nonetheless, John Fleetwood of American Faith has compiled a list of such companies that you should seriously consider boycotting.
While left-wing news media and celebrities applauded them as altruistic and generous, the ugly truth is that it is much less costly for employers to pay an employee to kill her baby than it is to provide healthcare coverage, maternity leave, and to retain the employee. These companies’ actions are anti-life, anti-family, and anti-woman.
The same goes for celebrities. No Christian should idolize any other human, particularly those who repeatedly mock Jesus and display an allegiance to the enemy through their conduct and occult symbols. Stop buying their music, watching their moves, purchasing their products, and following them on social media. Of course, we should pray for them to come to the full knowledge of the truth of Jesus Christ, but otherwise, we should not give them our attention. The apostle Paul asks in 2 Corinthians:
“For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?”
—2 Corinthians 6:14b-15 (NIV)
As for so-called Christians, the Bible is very clear on the issue of abortion:
Proverbs 24:11-12 (ESV): “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, ‘Behold, we did not know this,’ does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?”
Proverbs 6:16-17 (NIV): “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood.”
Jeremiah 1:5 (ESV): “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV): “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
Psalm 127:3 (ESV): “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.”
Exodus 20:13 (ESV): “You shall not murder.”
God, who “hates hands that shed innocent blood” calls us to “rescue those who are taken away to death!” What blood is more innocent than that of an unborn baby? It is also clear that the Lord knew and appointed us before we were even in our mothers’ wombs, where He then “fearfully and wonderfully” knit us together. Children are a “reward,” not a “choice,” as Pastor Warnock and others claim.
Church leaders who align with this murderous agenda tread on very dangerous ground. As Paul instructed the Ephesian elders:
“Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.”
—Acts 20:28 (ESV)
Not only will those “who teach be judged more strictly,” according to James 3:1, but Jesus warned that if we “are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” The only option for pastors who have compromised on abortion is to confess their error and repent.
Likewise, the church cannot stay silent on abortion. There are only two kingdoms. Either we are with Jesus or against Him. One gathers, the other scatters. Even in the new era of Dobbs, abortion has not been eradicated in America. The church arguably bears even greater responsibility to redeem what has been defiled by 50 years of innocent bloodshed. I pray for a renewed strength, boldness, and influence among the body to advance biblical truth on abortion on every mountain and to protect human life, God’s greatest treasure.
