Staying Grounded Through Discernment

In Articles, Drenda On Guard, Religion

Not everything spiritual is from God.

That may sound obvious.

Yet many believers live as though anything supernatural must automatically be trustworthy.

A powerful experience.

A prophetic word.

A dream.

A vision.

An impression.

A voice.

If it feels spiritual, many assume it must be God.

But Scripture gives a very different instruction.

It tells us to test what we hear.

To examine what we encounter.

To use discernment rather than assumption.

Because spiritual activity alone is not proof of divine origin.

The enemy has always worked through deception.

And deception is most effective when it appears close to the truth.

The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.

—Proverbs 14:15 (NIV)

Why Discernment Matters

We live in a time when spiritual voices are everywhere.

Opinions travel instantly.

Prophetic claims spread quickly.

Social media gives everyone a platform.

And while God is still speaking today, not everything being spoken is coming from Him.

That is why discernment is no longer optional.

It is essential.

Discernment is not suspicion.

It is not fear.

It is not cynicism.

Discernment is the God-given ability to recognize truth from error.

It helps us identify what aligns with God’s nature and what does not.

Without discernment, believers become vulnerable to confusion.

With discernment, they remain anchored in truth.

Truth Is Measured by the Word

One of the greatest mistakes believers make is allowing experiences to carry more weight than Scripture.

But God’s Word is the standard.

Not feelings.

Not impressions.

Not personalities.

Not popularity.

The Bible is the filter through which every spiritual experience must pass.

God will never contradict what is in the Bible.

He will never lead you away from truth.

He will never ask you to ignore His Word in order to follow a feeling.

If something disagrees with Scripture, the issue is already settled.

No matter how convincing it appears.

No matter who said it.

Truth remains truth.

Deception Often Begins with Confidence

One of the challenges with deception is that people who are deceived rarely realize it.

They often feel certain.

Confident.

Convinced.

That is why humility is such an important safeguard.

A teachable spirit protects us from becoming our own authority.

When believers stop receiving correction, they become vulnerable to error.

When they stop listening to wise counsel, they begin relying solely on themselves.

And isolation has led many people into deception.

God designed us to grow within community.

To receive wisdom.

To receive correction.

To remain accountable.

The most spiritually mature people are often the most teachable.

Not because they know less.

But because they understand how much they still need God.

Honor Protects What Is Holy

One of the greatest protections against spiritual deception is honor.

Honor for God’s Word.

Honor for His presence.

Honor for His truth.

When honor is present, we become slower to speak for God.

Slower to make assumptions.

Slower to claim certainty when we have not fully tested what we are hearing.

Honor values accuracy over attention.

It values truth over recognition.

It understands the seriousness of representing God correctly.

The goal is not to sound spiritual.

The goal is to remain faithful.

The Holy Spirit Leads Into Truth

The answer to deception is not fear.

It is greater dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said the Holy Spirit would guide believers into truth.

He does not lead through confusion.

He does not lead through manipulation.

He does not lead through contradiction.

His role is to reveal Christ, illuminate Scripture, and guide us according to God’s purposes.

The more time we spend in God’s presence, the more familiar we become with His voice.

And the more familiar we become with His voice, the easier it is to recognize what does not belong.

Discernment grows through relationship.

Not through anxiety.

Not through suspicion.

But through knowing God.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.

—John 16:13a (NIV)

Stay Grounded in a Confusing World

The days we are living in require spiritual maturity.

Not panic.

Not fear.

Not blind acceptance.

Maturity.

Believers must know how to evaluate what they hear.

How to test what they encounter.

How to remain grounded when spiritual confusion is increasing around them.

God has not left His people without guidance.

He has given us His Word.

He has given us His Spirit.

And He has given us the wisdom to discern truth from error.

The question is not whether voices are speaking.

The question is which voice you will trust.

Because when you learn to test the spirits, you position yourself to stand firm in truth, no matter what comes your way.

A Final Prayer

Father, thank You for giving us Your Word and Your Spirit to guide us into truth. In a world filled with competing voices, help us develop discernment that is rooted in Scripture and led by Your Spirit.

Protect us from deception, confusion, and anything that would pull us away from Your truth. Give us humble hearts that remain teachable and willing to receive correction.

Help us test everything we hear against Your Word and trust Your leading above every other voice. Strengthen us to walk in wisdom, maturity, and spiritual clarity.

In Jesus’s name, we pray. Amen.
